Avoiding a breakdown
The RAC were called out to over 2.5 million breakdowns in 2003. Many of these could have been avoided. The most common problems were flat or non-functioning batteries, and flat or non-serviceable tyres - neither the stuff of car maintenance nightmares.

Visit the RAC site, where you can find some basic maintenance instructions. It’s interesting to read through the top ten causes of breakdown, and common sense to put into practice the checks that can prevent them. There are also some simple self-help tips so that if you do experience a problem, you might be able to fix it yourself, mostly without even having to leave the driver’s seat, let alone lift the bonnet…

Taking your car abroad? Remember to take:

Here's a list of some of the most common causes of breakdown and recovery callout. Bear them in mind and don't be a breakdown victim!

Flat or faulty battery: car won't start.

Problem with keys: getting locked out of your car, or a problem with the immobilizer.

Flat tyres or damaged wheels. That deflated feeling...

Faulty alternator. Your battery won't charge.

Starter motor failure. You ain't going nowhere.

Run out of fuel (high red face rating).

Wrong fuel in tank (even redder…)

Broken clutch cable. It operates under stress, and can snap.

Problems with other parts such as split distributor cap, worn spark plugs, blown cylinder head gasket… Just be nice to your car - look after it, keep it serviced and report anything unusual.
